Dr.
Ika Dewi Ana is a dentist by training and a biomedical scientist based in
Yogyakarta 55281, Indonesia. Her research interests include calcium phosphate
chemistry, tissue engineering, drug and vaccine delivery systems, regenerative
therapy, and the development of personalized and AI-assisted regenerative
therapies. She is also an expert in innovation management. In her recent research, she has been working
on a lung-on-a-chip model for the MicroLung Project funded by the Joint
Funding Scheme (JFS) Southeast Asia (SEA) - Europe consortium. She is also part
of the BioTUNE Consortium, funded by the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA,
2020–2024), which focuses on fine-tuning cellular behaviour, antimicrobial, and
the immunomodulatory properties of medical implants.
Four of her research innovations, i.e., Carbonate Apatite (CHA) Bone Graft, CHA-based Haemostatic Sponge for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, CHA-based Haemostatic Sponge for General and Plastic Surgery, and Biomedical Membranes, have been officially registered and successfully commercialized in Indonesia. Two further technologies are currently undergoing valorisation: CHA Nanoparticles for Vaccine Adjuvants and CHA-based Immunomodulatory Biomedical Materials.
Dr. Ika has received numerous national and international awards from scientific societies in tissue engineering and biomaterials in recognition of her research achievements. She was honoured with the Outstanding Intellectual Property Award by the Government of the Republic of Indonesia in 2014 and the Habibie Prize 2022—the nation’s highest distinction in Science and Technology—in the field of Medicine and Biotechnology. She subsequently received the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) National Award for Inventors in 2023. In 2024, she was awarded the Gold Medal as an Academic Leader in Health and Medical Sciences by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia, followed by the Asia Best Innovation Award from The Hitachi Global Foundation (Japan) in December 2024. In 2025, she was further recognised by the Ministry as a STEM Senior Scientist and received Silver Award from the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia. In August 2026, she received Achmad Bakrie Award in Health Sciences. In 2025 and 2026, she is included in Top 2% Scientist by Stanford University.
In 2017, she completed a course in Innovation Management at Ashridge Business School, UK, funded by Rolls-Royce, the Newton Fund, and the Indonesian Ministry of Research and Technology. Between 2016 and 2022, she served as a commissioner of a medical device start-up company, overseeing the launch of several products that have since become market leaders in Indonesia, effectively substituting imported devices. She has been actively involved in multiple clinical trials and product evaluations for market approval and has contributed to the formulation of SNI (Standard Nasional Indonesia), the national standard for medical devices, under the Indonesian Standardization Bureau (BSN). Since 2022, Dr. Ika has led the Research Collaboration Centre for Biomedical Scaffolds, a nationally appointed research collaboration centres established by the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) of the Republic of Indonesia. In 2025, the centre was further designated by the government to transform into a Centre of Excellence (PUI-PT – Pusat Unggulan Ipteks Perguruan Tinggi) for Carbonate Apatite-based Extracellular Matrix and Adjuvants. She also served as a Council Member of TERMIS-AP (Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society–Asia Pacific).
Dr.
Ika holds 21 patents and has authored >11 book chapters published by
Springer Nature, Elsevier, CRC Press (Taylor & Francis), and Academic
Press. Her ORCID ID is 0000-0001-9957-4247.
